I don’t believe in a capsule wardrobe made up only of basics — I think it lacks personality. I love a good statement piece, and I think they’re what make your wardrobe more you. That said, to make those statement pieces work, I think you need creativity and a solid foundation of really good basics.
To me, curating a closet isn’t just about collecting clothes — it’s about building a collection of pieces you love, wear often, and can style in endless ways.
If you feel like you have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear, this is for you.
Where to start if you don’t know where to start:
Invest in timeless basics
Examples:
Investing in basics doesn’t mean they have to be plain or boring. Choosing elevated versions of the essentials you already love, with subtle details like fringe or unique textures, can add character while staying versatile. Opting for a different silhouette or cut, like a short leather jacket instead of a long one, can completely change the feel of your outfit while still being a basic. This is one of the most simple ways to elevate your overall style and always have something to wear.
Stick to a cohesive color palette
Choose a color palette that complements you, aligns with your style, and works well with your wardrobe staples. My basics are typically black, cream, and animal print (because it’s a neutral). While I have statement pieces I love that fall outside this palette, my basics and staple pieces generally stick to these shades. This makes getting dressed so much easier, as everything flows together seamlessly, whether you mix colors or go for a monochromatic look.
Get used to rewearing your clothes, but in new ways.
Clothes are meant to be worn — again and again. They aren’t just for a single occasion or an Instagram photo. Get used to the idea of repeating outfits and finding new ways to style the same pieces. Rewearing your clothes is a sign of a well-curated wardrobe, not a lack of creativity. A great way to be more creative with your clothes is to challenge yourself to style your favorite pieces differently each time you wear them.
Prioritize versatility
When shopping or editing your wardrobe, ask yourself:
Can this piece be dressed up or down?
Does it work across multiple seasons?
Will I wear this at least 30 times?
How can I style this with other items I already have?
Choosing items that serve multiple purposes makes it so much easier to always have something to wear.
Think in capsules
To me, capsules are mini collections of versatile pieces centered around specific themes — workwear, weekend casual, or vacation attire. For example, I have a dedicated vacation capsule with specific shoes and accessories I get excited to re-wear on certain trips. This is also where I usually include my statement pieces — those unique items that add personality and make the capsule feel special. Slowly curating capsules will eventually ensure you’re always ready for any occasion.
Accessories
Accessories are one of my favorite ways to change up my outfits and add personality — they’re meant to be worn over and over. I’m big into sunglasses, shoes, and handbags — I think they’re some of the easiest ways to add personality to an outfit. The more versatile the accessory, the better. For example, I love using scarves as a top, belt, headscarf, or bag accessory. With the right accessories, you can have endless options.
Invest in Outerwear
Growing up in Canada, I learned that for more than half the year, the coat is the outfit. Outerwear can redefine a look and I personally think it is always a great investment. Now that I live in Texas, where it’s warm most of the year, I’ve shifted my focus to investing in cardigans and lighter outerwear. A statement coat or cardigan — whether it’s a trench coat, leather jacket, or an oversized maxi cardigan (which is usually my go-to) instantly elevates even the simplest outfit.
Final Thoughts
A versatile closet isn’t about limiting your options — it’s about being creative and making life easier. By investing in timeless staples, shopping intentionally, and choosing items you can re-wear in many different ways, you can build a wardrobe that inspires you, your creativity, and that you truly love.
